Coming to terms with the
diagnosis with Cancer
Living with cancer describe the moment they learned of their diagnosis
as “ truly devastating.” Some felt betrayed by their bodies or angry at their
doctors. Some found themselves second-guessing the treatment decisions made
prior to this news. You may have these or similar thoughts, and you may
experience them all very intensely, Conversely, you may never experience such
feelings. Coming to terms with the diagnosis of advanced cancer is an
individual experience, and your way of dealing with your feeling will be
unique.
If you had cancer before and experienced a period of remission, you have
had time to learn much about cancer and its complexities. Facing a return of
the cancer when you know a lot about the disease can be even more frightening.
Survivors have found many ways to cope, and having information helps. Most
people find that it is important to concentrate on understanding their new cancer
diagnosis, research all available treatment options and take time to get other
medical opinions, Many find that using a coping strategy that has worked well
in the past helps them also deal with this stressful situation. A plan for
dealing with the first few weeks after diagnosis could include.
Talking with your family about treatment options, finances and other
important decision.
Involving friends and family members in the process of researching your
diagnosis and learning about available treatment options.
Finding a support group so you can talk with others facing a similar
diagnosis.
Finding time to be alone with your thoughts to clarify your concerns.
Many survivors emphasize that never talking to people becoming isolated
and distancing themselves from family and friends have been least helpful. Most
important, remember that coming to terms with your diagnosis is a process that
takes time and is different for everyone.
